This #THIRDTHURSDAY course will start by describing and educating on ACL anatomy. We will then progress to discussing the function of the ACL and common mechanisms of ACL injury. Attendees will learn common physical exam findings associated with ACL tears. Indications, treatment options and outcomes following ACL surgery will also be discussed.
Dr. Jordan Goldstein MD shares his insight and expertise on "ACL: What is it, why do we need it, and how to fix it."

Dr. Jordan Goldstein, MD Orthopaedic Surgeon, Illinois Bone and Joint, Park Ridge, IL Dr. Goldstein specializes in the treatment of shoulder, elbow, and knee conditions with advanced arthroscopic shoulder and knee ligament reconstructive techniques, shoulder replacement, and cartilage restoration. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. In addition to publishing several peer reviewed research articles and presenting theoretical lectures, he has taught as an associate master instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America. Additionally, Dr. Goldstein has presented advanced arthroscopic video techniques at national meetings.

The Workplace Transparency Act (Public Act 101-0221), requires anyone who is employed in Illinois complete sexual harassment prevention training annually. For individuals with a professional license issued by the IDPR, with a CE requirement, must complete a 1 CE hour of Sexual Harassment Prevention Training, per renewal cycle.
Maintaining a safe and healthy work environment is a vital role for all employees and employers. This course will review sexual harassment in the workplace including various forms and manifestations of sexual harassment.
IPTA's Ethics Committee will review steps to take if one experiences or witnesses sexual harassment in the workplace including how to report harassment to workplace supervisors, anonymous call in lines, and state agencies. Whistleblower protections will be reviewed for employees that report sexual harassment in the workplace. Case examples will be provided to apply course concepts on recognizing and reporting harassment.
This course meets the 1 hour Sexual Harassment Prevention training required by the State of Illinois.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Following completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe sexual harassment.
- Recognize different forms and manifestations of sexual harassment that constitute unlawful action.
- Demonstrate an understanding of what one should do if they experience or witness sexual harassment.
- Demonstrate an awareness of state and federal statutes concerning sexual harassment including remedies available to victims of sexual harassment.
- Discuss the responsibilities of employers in the prevention, investigation, and corrective measures of sexual harassment including whistleblower protections for individuals who report sexual harassment.
- Demonstrate the ability to develop a plan to report sexual harassment if it were to occur in the workplace to both employer and state agencies.

Ann W. Jackson, PT, DPT, MPH is a physical therapist who received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from Georgia State University, a Masters of Public Health from the University of South Carolina and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Rosalind Franklin University. Her clinical interests include: children and adults living with neuromuscular conditions, rehabilitation needs following a cancer diagnosis/care, integration of community resources into long term care plans. Her research interests include: efficacy of service delivery models and outcome measures. |
Demetra John PT, PhD received her physical therapy training from Northwestern University and her PhD in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She is retired after working more than 30 years at UIC in multiple faculty and administrative roles. Demetra is a member of the IPTA Ethics Committee and the IPTF Pro Bono Committee. She has provided pro bono physical therapy services to the uninsured for over 25 years. |
Paula Eppenstein, PT, MS received her physical therapy training from Northwestern University and her Master of Science degree from Northwestern University. Over the span of her career, she has worked in various levels of care and in numerous roles, including front line care, education and training and eventually leadership positions. She is semi-retired after working more than 35 years. She still continues to speak on healthcare related topics and is actively involved in simulation based training for medical and students in other healthcare fields. Paula is a member of the IPTA Ethics Committee and the IPTA CE Audit Review Committee. |

As of January 1, 2023, Illinois licensed physical therapists may certify that a patient has a medical condition that meets the requirements for the state to issue a temporary or permanent disability placard. IPTA Executive Director, Colleen Flannery will walk through the forms, process, do and don'ts for certifying disability placards in Illinois.

Implicit bias is a form of bias that occurs automatically and unintentionally, that nevertheless affects judgments, decisions, and behaviors.
This educational session will introduce participants to implicit bias, where they come from, how they are formed, and explain how it differs from explicit bias. Participants will understand the impact of implicit bias on healthcare delivery and the harm it may cause their patients and clients. This session will utilize methods to help participants recognize bias and learn how to interrupt and mitigate the effects in their clinical spaces.
This course meets the 1 hour Implicit Bias training required by the State of Illinois. Since this is a virtual live webinar, this counts as "live" CE. The Implicit Bias Training Mandate for Health Care Workers was signed into Law in the summer of 2021. For license or registration renewals occurring on or after January 1, 2023, all health care professionals who hold a professional license (listed in Section 1130.500 Implicit Bias Awareness Training) shall complete a one-hour course in implicit bias awareness training per renewal period. A licensee may count this one hour for completion of this course towards meeting the minimum credit hours required for continuing education.

About the Speaker
Tobey Yeates , PT, DPT, OCS is a Director of Clinical Education (DCE) at Northwestern University Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences (NUPTHMS). Dr. Yeates has been on the faculty at NUPTHMS since 2008 and has served in the role of DCE since 2020. She is a certified clinical specialist in orthopedic physical therapy and an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor. She also serves in the role of Associate Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Department of Physical Therapy. Her research interests include student experiences of microaggressions during full-time clinical education.

This #THIRDTHURSDAY course is designed to open a discussion about the interconnectedness of functional impairments and nutrition in the care of persons facing chronic health conditions. Information will be provided to promote a quick assessment of food insecurity among the patient populations we serve and practical ideas to address the deficits. A guided discussion with participants will also occur on meaningful ways to cause impact in the clinical setting in which they work.

What to expect:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe food insecurity and identify the factors that are used to determine if an individual is food insecure.
- Analyze the relationship between food insecurity, chronic disease, frailty and functional impairment.
- Evaluate the available outcome measures to screen for food insecurity and functional impairment in the clinical environment.
- Discuss the role and ethical responsibility of the rehabilitation provider in identifying food insecurity in relation to the PT scope of practice in providing nutritional support and counseling in an effort to maximize management of chronic disease and optimize function.
- Explore possible opportunities of engagement within your community to address food insecurity among medically vulnerable populations.

The pandemic presented an opportunity for health care professions to provide telehealth services with soft rules in place. This gave both providers and payers time to study the impact and negotiate permanent laws and rules to guide digital health delivery in Illinois for the long term.
Two substantial pieces of legislation were passed that provide the pathway for delivering telehealth today. This program will provide an overview of these laws as well as information about the proposed rules that will guide the delivery of physical therapy through telehealth for Illinois.

This course will review the new official position of APTA drafted and presented by IPTA which supports that nonpharmacologic blood pressure management is within the scope of physical therapy practice. Dr. Severin serves as clinical faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Illinois at Chicago and is the coordinator of the bariatric surgery rehabilitation program at UIHealth. He is also a part-time clinical assistant professor in the Hybrid Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Baylor University. His research and clinic practice interests include cardiorespiratory physiology, and obesity.

This #THIRDTHURSDAY lecture focuses on post operative total knee arthroplasty patients. Learn about common concerns patients face in the early rehab period. Participants will be able to identify some early and late complications and when to refer back to the surgeon. Learn of about the early weeks of rehab after total knee arthroplasty, and early warning signs for infection. Examples will be given of treating early arthrofibrosis as well as late arthrofibrosis. The speaker discusses the diagnostic work up for a painful total knee replacement and highlight some of the common problems that can occur after a knee replacement.
Dr. Bradley John Zarling, MD, Adult Hip and Knee Reconstructive Surgeon shares his insight and expertise on "Evaluation of the Painful Total Knee Arthroplasty."

- Recognize early warning signs of complications after a knee replacement
- Describe different causes of pain after knee replacement
- Describe arthrofibrosis diagnosis and treatment options
About the Speaker:
Dr. Bradley John Zarling, MD, Adult Hip and Knee Reconstructive Surgeon is a Chicago suburb native. He completed his medical school at The Chicago Medical School where he met his wife. After medical school he completed his training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Detroit Medical Center where he was exposed to a wide range of orthopaedic trauma, sports injuries and complex arthroplasty surgery. He then specialized in total joint replacement at the University of Chicago where he focused on minimally invasive techniques, robotic assisted surgery and managing complex revision surgeries. His research has been published and presented at national meetings. He has received recognition for his outstanding contributions in the field of joint replacement and healthcare quality improvement.
Dr. Zarling and his wife now have 3 children. They are excited to be back in the Chicago suburbs and share their medical expertise.
Dr. Zarling's philosophy is to first educate his patients on their condition and then share in the decision making by offering the most advanced evidence based treatments

June is recognized as National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month. Headaches are among the most common disorders of the human nervous system and can often wreak havoc on a sufferer’s daily life. Headaches can cause pain in the neck, sinuses, face, and head and can last for hours or days. This #THIRDTHURSDAY lecture will review etiology and classification of headaches along with assessment and treatment options as it relates to physical therapy.
Dr. Smriti (Simi) Wagle, D.O. shares her insight and expertise on "Overview of Headache Evaluation for Physical Therapists."

- Understand the generators of head pain
- Classify common headache types along with potential etiologies
- Know the 'red flags' in a headache history

About the Speaker:
Dr. Smriti (Simi) Wagle, D.O. is a practicing general neurologist at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. She completed her training in 2003 and sees patients in the outpatient along with inpatient setting, reads EEGs and also performs EMG/nerve conduction studies. She is originally from Iowa and did her undergraduate and medical school training there. She completed her neurology residency through the Michigan State Health System and then an EMG/neurophysiology fellowship through the Mayo Clinic Health System. Since completing her training, she has chosen to practice general neurology and cares for patients with seizures, strokes, Parkinson's, memory loss, neuropathy and headaches. She is an associate professor and the assistant clerkship director for Neurology at the Rosalind Franklin University Medical School. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, reading and cooking.
